Watercolor artists have long used enameled butcher trays for mixing colors because the nonstick surface is very easy to clean and paint does not bead up like it will on plastic or waxed paper palettes.

Though we think they're quite nice to look at, it's worth noting that butcher trays are not made to be perfect. They may have chips around the rim, the paint may not be applied evenly, and the bottom is not quite flat. But they are still excellent tools for watercolor mixing, especially if you want the freedom to mix many colors at once.
